The Mama that saved the day by altering first day of school outfit

The night before kindergarten, my niece, Estella, proudly laid out the purple outfit she had picked for herself and admired in her closet for a month.

But when my sister took a closer look as she took off the tags, she realized that in the chaos of errands, pregnancy brain, and shopping with two girls, the outfit she had bought was only an 18 month size.

For a precocious girl who had been counting down the days when she could finally wear this skirt, it was a devastating discovery. Cue the scene: while Dad, Josh, handled the bedtime routine, Abby dashed off to Kohl’s, praying they’d still have the outfit in the right size.

Miraculously, they did.
Triumphantly, she returned home with the bigger version.
Except… the “right size” was now too big.

The universe had a sense of humor that night, but Mama was determined. She found a needle and thread and hand-sewed a few quick alterations. She’s not a seamstress, but saved the morning anyway. The skirt fit. Estella sparkled with delight as she experienced the magical first day of school that unfolded just as she dreamed.

She was happy to wear it for pictures next to my parents’ beautiful star clematis for her aunt “Andra.”

It brings us so much joy to watch these sisters, Estella & Amelia, get closer as they grow older. We used a leaf blower to generate some authentic smiles & I highly recommend it! There was such a shift in their energy once they were playing instead of just posing. The girls are welcoming a brother this winter and he will be very loved by his sisters… and a huge extended family.

It’s a couple hours into October 3, 2025. Blogging while listening to The Life of a Showgirl, and it is already growing on me. I’m definitely a CANCELLED! fan and can’t wait to see the movie later today! Abby & I already texted each other our synopsis of the album, and I can’t wait to discuss as we continue to digest it. What track stands out to you?

I was never a “Swiftie” until 2021 when Abby introduced me to “Exile” while we were driving through mountains in Colorado. I had been editing pictures to Bon Iver for over a decade, so I was instantly sold on Folklore & Evermore. In fact, Evermore has been an especially comforting song this summer, reminding me that pain isn’t forever. And I’m ready to see what it’s like to “dance through the lightning strikes.”
